Mekong Delta

Project Summary

This three-year project supported local farmers in implementing lotus cultivation as a flood-based-agriculture in three provinces of the Mekong Delta. The expansion of lotus-based models in these provinces looked to:

  • increase the flood retention storage which was under increasing loss in recent years
  • restore wetlands ecosystems
  • create a sustainable supply chain for lotus silk production.

The project takes a two-pronged approached to ensuring lotus silk production supports sustainable flood livelihoods. It provides farmers with:

technical support/training to produce flood-based livelihood designs for lotus cultivation to increase flood retention areas

implementation plans and strategies to manage drought and floods

The goal of the project is to build a sustainable supply chain for the production of products made from lotus silk by supporting livelihoods and improving economic conditions for lotus farmers and craftsmen in traditional weaving villages.
